Pūjā By Brant

Pūjā, from the Sanskrit denoting worship, honour and adoration, refers to religious rituals based in the Hindu tradition.

This project explores facets of prayer, offerings and spiritual homage, in literal and abstract form. Pujas are pervasive and inextricable from daily life in India. They are practiced and observed on a multitude of occasions and in diverse settings. They are made in reverence to a variety of divine beings, routinely in public, outside of the confines of the home and temple. A rarity to the Western eye, the tradition has crossed cultures and been adopted by those of differing religious backgrounds.

Puja is an element of unification through diversity. It spans not only a massive continent, but a complex array of people.

At the inception of this project, I had a clear idea in mind of an image around which the work would be built. While in the research phase, prior to leaving for India, I was told of a daily sunrise gathering – a group that practices laughter yoga on the beach at Marine Drive in Bombay. I carried this mental image for some time, and through it, developed the concept behind the project. On the first day of shooting, I found exactly what I had imagined and the first image of Puja was actualized.

Just back from India with the beginnings of a new (likely long term) personal project,
Pūjā.
More details elaborating on the intent and scope of the work to follow shortly.
I’ll be posting new images regularly over the next few weeks as I go through the editing process.
As usual, comments are welcome and much appreciated.

A few shots from a project I was very fortunate and proud to work on over the summer.

From the highly anticipated, debut release titled, “My Mountain” (look for it in early 2012).

My good friend, the super talented, Hersko.

Back to dabbling in 35 mm film (and finally learning how to really use my scanner).

Thanks to Matt Hodge for the incredible gear.
